We’ve had the Golden Globes and the SAG awards already. But while there may be some debate on whether it ultimately honors the best, the upcoming Academy Awards is certainly the event of the movie season. If you’re planning an Oscar watching party for a crowd, or even just for 2, having some easy party food inspired by film is a fun way to celebrate the celluloid.
We may be forced to munch on oily popcorn and sugary junk in the theaters, but at home, there are more possibilities for movie watching fare than there are paparazzi in LA. Choosing what to eat while watching a film, or watching a spectacle like the Oscars could be a challenge. Why not think in terms of supporting characters and themes?
The supporting role
This year’s best picture nominees have little to do with food, but each one spans a certain era and takes place in a location that could inspire some truly creative easy party food choices.
If you’re a fan of “Argo”, the film about the escape of diplomats during the time of the Iranian hostage crisis, then look towards the middle east for your selection. Hummus seems the likely option, but let’s get more authentic with a recipe for Shireen Pulao This dish is a combination of chicken, oranges, pistachios, and carrots seasoned with curry, saffron, and chili powder. Served over rice, this is sure to get noticed.
Go ahead and throw in the hummus as a nod to “Zero Dark Thirty”and it’s Middle Eastern action around the capture of Osama Bin Laden.
Are you a fan of Spielberg’s “Lincoln”? Consider the food of the times and try serving some of what’s thought to be one of Lincoln’s favorites, oysters.
Both “Amour” and “Les Miserables” cry out for French cuisine. You can play with cheeses, pate and wine, or use this as a dessert opportunity and serve sweet French pastry. If you’re feeling adventurous – try making dessert crepes, like this recipe for the crepe. Then fill it with dark chocolate, raspberry puree, fresh strawberries, or lemon creme.
“Beasts of the Southern Wild” is a bayou story with a main character named Hushpuppy. Too easy? Then whip up some taste-bud awakening bayou favorites with catfish, or try crab, like these crab boulettes
As for “Life of Pi”, “Silver Linings Playbook”, and “Django Unchained” the food choices may not be as obvious. Perhaps this is where your easy party food ideas go “freestyle”! Consider choosing a beverage for this group, like a nice wine from Silver Oak, or a ‘Bangled Tiger’ cocktail. It’s a mix of:
- 1 oz of Rum
- 2 ounces orange juice
- 1 oz Pineapple juice
- 1 tsp Grenadine
